My friend Gabriel Koel invited me to celebrate his daughters 1st birthday. This was my first time meeting his wife, Juliana, and daughter Awan as friends of his tribe from South Sudan came together.
We shared a meal of Sudanese food, laughter, cake and the merriment of children playing. Gabriel’s hospitality and the friendship of his friends touched me in a way that is filled with Love.
While talking with his friends, he mention and introduced me to his friend Joseph. They were part of the “Lost Boys of Sudan” documentary of the misfortunes of civil war. They would both make their way to Kenya as refugees. Eventually they settled in Denver .
Here’s it gets interesting … Gabriel tells me Joseph came to the United States, entered the U.S. Army around 2006 -2007. Joseph is deployed to Iraq in 2009 for a year. I Welcomed him with open arms and said “Thank You for your Service !” This is only time I can recall that I meet someone from another country , comes here to become a citizen and joins the Armed Forces to fight for Freedom.
