In a letter dated March 14, 1970 to my mother and family announced my re-assignment to Pleiku and how upset I was to leave the airmen I became friends with. In some instances, there were 3 or 4 of us who attended Air Force Combat School, known as “AZR.” The 2 week course was held outside of Lackland AFB (San Antonio,TX) at Camp Bullis (I think that’s the correct designation). The training was comprised of night fire, live fire… deploying from deuce and half’s in ambush situations and that’s what I remember of it.

Anyway, at Cam Rahn Bay; I grew to believe the safety at the base was secure. The Republic of Korea, Tiger Division was conducting sweep’s on the mainland side of the Bay for about 20 click’s out.

Back to the letter… I wrote and mention about buying a SKS rifle and mailing it back to the family in California. After arrival at Pleiku some months later.. I shelved the idea. Maybe it had to do with the occasional sniper fire.

About pleiku1970

My service at Pleiku, 1970 is significient because of the Cambodian Incursion. Close proximity to exit routes from the Ho Chi Minh Trail and the "Tri-Border area of Laos,Cambodia and Vietnam. This Air Force assignment was different than most, because of the isolation.
